Where it came from
Forgotten Cave first appeared as an uncommon land in the 2002 Scourge expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as part of a cycle of cycling lands, the card was intended to provide deck utility by allowing players to discard the card in exchange for drawing a new one, effectively mitigating mana flood in the late game. Its inclusion in the 2018 Commander Anthology Volume II marked its role as a staple for deck building within the multiplayer Commander format.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Tony Szczudlo. The design utilizes a moody, cavernous aesthetic intended to evoke the desolate and stagnant nature of a place long abandoned. Within the broader context of the game's design history, the card is respected for its functional simplicity and the strategic flexibility it offers players, remaining a reliable choice for budget-conscious deck construction across various formats.
