Where it came from
Fork was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set, the foundational collection that inaugurated the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from a desire to create a portable, fast-paced strategy experience for hobbyists. The set was printed in a limited run and is now considered the most significant artifact in the game's history, establishing the core mechanics and color pie that would define the genre for decades.
The card features iconic original artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and celebrated illustrators of the early game. Rush’s design for Fork captures the chaotic, high-fantasy aesthetic of early Magic, utilizing a bold and direct visual style that complemented the card's function as a powerful red-aligned instant. Upon release, the card was immediately recognized for its tactical versatility, allowing players to replicate powerful spells, and it remains a cornerstone of the game's vintage format identity.
