Provenance

Where it came from

Fork was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering. Developed by Wizards of the Coast and designed by Richard Garfield, the set served as a refined, black-bordered expansion to the original Alpha and Beta printings. It was created to satisfy the immense, immediate demand for the game following its initial launch, solidifying the rules and aesthetics that would define the trading card game genre for decades to come.

The card's original illustration was created by artist Douglas Shuler. Shuler provided a distinct, high-fantasy aesthetic that characterized much of the game's early identity, focusing on the literal interpretation of the spell's function—copying an instant or sorcery. As a red spell, Fork was designed to mirror the chaos and unpredictability of the color, and it has since been received by the community as a quintessential artifact of early game balance and high-power interaction.
