Where it came from
Foundry of the Consuls was first released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering Commander set, designed as a utility land that provides colorless mana while offering a late-game outlet for excess resources. The card reflects the industrial aesthetic of the plane of Kaladesh, emphasizing the city of Ghirapur where inventors compete to create intricate artifacts and constructs. Its mechanics represent the process of fueling public works or monumental creations, forcing a choice between immediate utility and the eventual deployment of a pair of Thopter construct tokens.
The card was illustrated by the artist Jung Park, who leaned into the ornate, copper-toned architectural style characteristic of the Kaladesh setting. By depicting the grand, cavernous spaces where the city’s artificers labor, the art conveys the scale and ambition of the Consuls’ engineering efforts. It has remained a staple in budget-conscious Commander decks, appreciated by players for its dual role as a mana source and a repeatable engine for board presence in longer, grinding games.
