Where it came from
Fractured Identity was released in 2017 as part of the Commander 2017 preconstructed deck set, specifically within the Draconic Domination deck. The card was designed for the multiplayer Commander format, a social variant of Magic: The Gathering that emphasizes high-impact, board-altering sorceries. Its design intent centers on the unique political landscape of the format, allowing a player to remove a problematic permanent from an opponent while simultaneously granting that same threat to every other player, often leading to chaotic board states and forced alliances.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Magali Villeneuve, who chose to depict a surreal, splintering visage that mirrors the card's mechanics of duplicating and distributing a target's form. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a powerful and highly effective 'catch-up' mechanic. It remains a staple in blue-white commander decks due to its versatility as both a targeted removal spell and a way to generate significant value by copying the strongest artifact, creature, or enchantment on the battlefield.
