What it does
Each player loses half their life, then discards half the cards in their hand, then sacrifices half the creatures they control of their choice. Round up each time.
The Great Mending that healed the Multiverse also unraveled the threads of Nicol Bolas's power.

Where it came from
Fraying Omnipotence was released in 2018 as part of the Core Set 2019 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Wizards of the Coast designed this core set to serve as an accessible entry point for new players while maintaining the strategic depth expected by long-term fans. The card reflects the set's thematic exploration of dragon-themed power and high-stakes sorcery, specifically functioning as a rare black spell intended to drastically reset the momentum of a game by forcing players to sacrifice half their creatures and discard half their cards.
The artwork was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, a veteran artist for the game known for his dramatic, high-fantasy style. Velinov aimed to capture the overwhelming, destructive essence of absolute power, utilizing a dark, saturated color palette that emphasizes the card's theme of inevitable decay. Upon its release, the card was noted by the community as a quintessential 'casual' or 'commander' format tool, designed more for its dramatic table-altering effect than for competitive tournament optimization.
