Where it came from
Metamorphic Alteration was released in 2018 as part of the Core Set 2019 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed to serve as a versatile utility card within the blue color identity, it functions as an enchantment that allows a player to have a creature they control enter the battlefield as a copy of another creature, while also providing the option to attach it to an existing creature to transform it into a copy of another. This card reflects the game's long-standing tradition of blue-aligned clone effects, focusing on themes of shapeshifting and magical mimicry.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Deruchenko Alexander. The visual direction emphasizes the fluidity and surreal nature of transformation, capturing the magical instability inherent in the card's effect. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for Commander and casual play formats, praised by players for its flexibility as both a removal deterrent and a means to amplify a battlefield presence by duplicating powerful board states.
