Where it came from
Fraying Sanity was originally printed in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Hour of Devastation, designed to capture the flavor of Nicol Bolas's influence on the plane of Amonkhet. The card functions as an enchantment that accelerates mill strategies, forcing opponents to exile their libraries as their graveyard grows. It reflects the set's themes of psychological distress and the erosion of order under a tyrannical deity.
The Enchanting Tales version, released in 2023 for Wilds of Eldraine, features a unique aesthetic treatment known as the 'Storybook' frame. This special reprint was part of a bonus sheet designed to evoke the whimsical, fairy-tale nature of the Eldraine plane. The artwork maintains the original illustration by Magali Villeneuve, which depicts a fracturing mind in striking, ethereal detail, adapted here to fit the ornate, classic-fantasy layout of the supplementary set.
