Where it came from
Fungal Infection is a common-rarity black instant card introduced in the Jumpstart 2022 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Released in December 2022, the set was designed to facilitate quick, randomized gameplay by featuring 46 distinct themes that players could combine into ready-to-play decks. The card was created to provide low-cost interaction within the format, specifically catering to the black-aligned graveyard and sacrifice archetypes that often define the color's strategy in limited environments.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, depicts a visceral, decaying aesthetic consistent with Magic's long-standing horror themes. Kieryluk, a frequent contributor to the game, focuses on the thematic intersection of nature and corruption. The card's design—providing a small static debuff while potentially enabling creature death triggers—reflects the mechanical philosophy of the Jumpstart series: offering versatile, utility-focused tools that bridge the gap between aggressive early-game play and late-game resource management.
