Where it came from
Sigil of the Empty Throne first appeared in the Shards of Alara expansion in 2008 as a key piece for enchantment-themed decks. Designed as an enchantment that rewards players for casting other enchantments, it reflects the block's focus on the Bant shard, where themes of peace, law, and structure were prevalent. The card has since become a staple in casual Commander circles, favored for its ability to generate a recurring army of angelic tokens.
The Jumpstart 2022 printing, numbered 244, was released to provide a streamlined, randomized play experience that highlights iconic cards from Magic’s history. The illustration by Greg Staples maintains the card's original evocative aesthetic, capturing the regal and ethereal nature of a celestial throne. It remains a celebrated card for its functional simplicity and strong synergy with enchantment-heavy archetypes.
