Where it came from
Fungal Infection was released in 2018 as part of the Dominaria expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a return to the game's original plane, Dominaria, and was designed to evoke nostalgia for long-time players while introducing modern mechanics. The card was created to serve as a low-cost removal spell, specifically targeting small creatures, while reinforcing the set's thematic focus on the spreading influence of the villainous Cabal.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, whose work often leans into the dark and visceral aesthetics of the black mana color identity. Velinov's depiction of the fungal corruption reflects the grittier tone of the Dominaria setting, emphasizing the parasitic and transformative nature of the infection. It was received by the player community as a functional, efficient utility card for limited formats, praised for its clarity of purpose and thematic integration.
