Where it came from
Galvanic Relay was introduced in the 2021 set Modern Horizons 2, a product specifically designed for the Modern format in Magic: The Gathering. The card was crafted as a powerful tool for storm-based archetypes, rewarding players for chaining together multiple low-cost spells in a single turn. It emerged during a design era focused on high-synergy mechanics that bridge the gap between vintage power levels and contemporary card balance.
The illustration for the card was provided by artist Titus Lunter. Lunter’s work on the piece utilizes a vibrant, high-energy color palette intended to evoke the chaotic, electrical nature of a discharge spell. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a defining engine for 'storm' decks, eventually finding a stable place in competitive Modern and Legacy play patterns due to its ability to generate significant card advantage.
