Where it came from
Imperial Recruiter was originally printed in the Portal Three Kingdoms set in 1999, designed to capture the flavor of historical Chinese military strategy. It remained a relatively obscure card for years until its mechanical utility as a tutor for small creatures made it a staple in competitive formats like Legacy and Commander, leading Wizards of the Coast to reprint it in modern supplemental sets.
The Modern Horizons 2 version, featuring collector number 281, utilizes the artwork by Igor Kieryluk. This printing updated the card's frame to the modern layout while retaining the distinct tactical identity that made the original card a highly sought-after utility tool for players looking to pull specific engine pieces directly from their decks.
