Where it came from
Garruk, Veiled Butcher was released as part of the Reality Fracture expansion, a set centered on the narrative concept of planar instability and the corruption of iconic planeswalkers. The card depicts Garruk Wildspeaker in a state of deep magical compromise, reflecting the set's broader theme of characters struggling against external manipulation. As a planeswalker card, it was designed to function as a focal point for mid-range green-black decks, emphasizing board control and creature-based attrition.
The artwork was commissioned to emphasize a somber, cinematic aesthetic, moving away from Garruk's traditional rugged appearance toward something more sinister and weathered. Illustrators focused on the visual tension between his iconic axe and the ethereal, dark energy surrounding his frame. Upon release, the card was widely analyzed by the competitive community for its unique loyalty ability structure, which offered a distinct shift in how players utilized the character's traditional mechanical identity.
