Provenance

Where it came from

The Gempalm Strider was originally released in the 2003 Legions set, designed as part of a cycle of cards featuring the 'cycling' mechanic that allowed players to discard the card for a tactical benefit. It returned in the 2007 Duel Decks: Elves vs. Goblins, a preconstructed product specifically engineered to showcase the historical mechanical rivalry between two of Magic: The Gathering's most iconic creature types.

The artwork for this printing was provided by Tim Hildebrandt, one half of the legendary Brothers Hildebrandt duo known for their atmospheric fantasy illustrations. His depiction of the strider emphasizes the lean, predatory nature of the Elf scout, rendered with the painterly, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined much of the game’s visual identity during that era. It was well-received by players for its utility in combat-focused tribal decks.
