Gempalm Strider

Gempalm Strider was released in February 2003 as part of the Legions expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique in the history of the game for being composed entirely of creature cards, a design experiment intended to emphasize the tribal mechanics that defined the Onslaught block. As a member of the Beast creature type, the Strider featured the cycling ability, which allowed players to discard the card to draw a new one or cast it for its combat-focused ability, providing flexibility during the fast-paced gameplay of the era.

The card's illustration was provided by Tim Hildebrandt, one half of the renowned Brothers Hildebrandt duo known for their atmospheric fantasy art. Tasked with depicting the strider, Hildebrandt utilized his signature style to create a formidable, long-limbed beast that felt perfectly integrated into the organic, primal aesthetic of the Legions set. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats, where its combination of a power-boosting ability and the versatility of cycling made it a reliable utility creature.
