Provenance

Where it came from

Willbender was released in February 2003 as part of the Legions expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a set, Legions was unique in the history of the game for consisting entirely of creature cards, a design choice intended to emphasize the theme of an escalating battlefield war. The card reflects the Morph mechanic prevalent in the Onslaught block, which allowed players to cast creatures face-down as colorless 2/2s before revealing them for a specific effect.

The artwork for Willbender was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast and illustrated by artist Daren Bader. Bader’s design features a cloaked, mysterious figure manipulating magical energy, fitting the card’s ability to redirect spells or abilities. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical flexibility, becoming a staple in various blue-based control decks during its time in the tournament format.
