Where it came from
Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant was released as part of the Dominaria United Commander set in 2022. The card depicts a key artifact from the lore of Magic: The Gathering, referencing the tragic history of the character Gerrard Capashen, the legendary hero of the Weatherlight Saga. The card was designed to function as a mana rock that also provides a unique tactical advantage by resetting the board state to a previous turn's progress, reflecting the temporal manipulation often associated with Gerrard's legacy in the narrative.
The illustration for the card was provided by artist Volkan Baga, who is well-regarded for his work on numerous iconic fantasy assets. Baga focused on capturing the weathered, ancient aesthetic of the pendant, emphasizing its intricate metalwork and the ethereal glow of the sands within. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile utility piece for Commander players, valued for its ability to punish opponents who overextend their resources or to recover from catastrophic board states.
