Provenance

Where it came from

The Ghazbán Ogre first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a high-risk, high-reward creature. Its unique ability to switch control if the player's life total dropped below a certain threshold added a layer of psychological tension to early gameplay. The card became a staple of early red decks, reflecting the chaotic and aggressive nature of the color's philosophy during the game's formative years.

For the Fifth Edition printing released in 1997, the card featured artwork by Mike Raabe, who leaned into the Ogre's brutal and simple-minded aesthetic. This version was part of a massive effort by Wizards of the Coast to compile a representative base set from previous expansions. Raabe’s illustration remains a recognizable example of the mid-nineties aesthetic that defined the transition of the game from a niche hobby to a global phenomenon.
