The Ghazbán Ogre first debuted in the Arabian Nights expansion in 1993, representing one of the earliest examples of creatures that fluctuated in power based on the owner's life total. This mechanic reflected the flavor of the Arabian Nights setting, where creatures were often volatile, temperamental, or bound by strict conditions. The artwork, originally by Jesper Myrvold, captures the raw, feral nature of the ogre in a style consistent with the early, painterly aesthetic that defined the formative years of Magic: The Gathering.

The Fifth Edition printing, released in 1997, marked the card's inclusion in the core set era.
