Ambush Party

Ambush Party was introduced as part of the Fifth Edition core set for Magic: The Gathering, released in March 1997. As a core set, Fifth Edition was designed to consolidate various cards from earlier expansions into a standardized, evergreen format, serving as the primary entry point for new players during that period. The card itself reflects the mechanical focus on creature-based combat and board manipulation that defined the game's early identity.

The illustration for Ambush Party was created by artist Anson Maddocks, one of the original illustrators for the game. Maddocks utilized his signature moody, atmospheric style to capture the sudden, chaotic nature of an encounter in the wild. Upon release, while the card was not considered a high-powered staple for tournament play, it was well-regarded for its thematic flavor and served as a functional representative of red-aligned aggression within the Fifth Edition card pool.
