Where it came from
Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds was released in 2024 as part of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced a thematic blend of high-fantasy tropes with Western motifs, reimagining established characters in new roles. Ghired, previously seen in the Commander 2019 decks, was reimagined here as a character thriving in the lawless frontier setting of the plane.
The card was designed to function within the populate mechanic, emphasizing the creation of token copies to overwhelm opponents. The artwork, credited to Wisnu Tan, leans into the character's signature rhythmic, nature-attuned aesthetic, portraying him with a rugged, western-inspired sensibility that fits the set's overarching stylistic shift. It was received by players as a flexible commander for green-white-red decks, specifically favored for its ability to mimic high-impact creature tokens.
