Where it came from
Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds was introduced as part of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2024. The card represents a reimagining of the character Ghired, originally debuted in the Commander 2019 set, reflecting the character's journey into the western-themed setting of Thunder Junction. This specific version, numbered 205s, serves as a promo variant that features distinct aesthetic treatments designed to align with the expansion's cinematic frontier narrative.
The artistic direction for this incarnation was intended to emphasize Ghired’s role as a master of animal spirits, blending his traditional Selesnya nature-focused identity with the rugged, adventurous atmosphere of the set. Wizards of the Coast design teams utilized this promo treatment to offer players a unique visual iteration of the legend, focusing on vibrant, stylized portrayals that depart from the standard set frame. It was received as a functional and stylistic update for Commander players, maintaining the character's signature populate mechanics while providing a fresh aesthetic for tabletop play.
