Ghost Tactician

Ghost Tactician was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos set, the second expansion in the Time Spiral block for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore an alternate reality where historical events in the game's lore had unfolded differently, leading to a mechanical color-pie shift. The card reflects this thematic instability by utilizing the ghost creature type and tactical abilities associated with the white mana color identity within that experimental narrative framework.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and influential figures in the early history of the game. His design sought to capture the spectral, ethereal nature of the creature while grounding it in the rigid, strategic aesthetic characteristic of white-aligned soldiers and tacticians of the era. The piece was well-received for its atmospheric contribution to the set’s alternate-timeline premise, maintaining a balance between high-fantasy heroism and the ghostly aesthetic requested for the card's specific lore requirements.
