Where it came from
Ghost Vacuum was released as part of the promotional card cycle for the 2024 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Duskmourn: House of Horror. The set draws heavy inspiration from 1980s and 1990s horror aesthetics, centering on an expansive, reality-warping haunted mansion. This particular card was designed to embody the tactile, analog feel of the era's supernatural tropes, fitting into the set's broader mechanical theme of interacting with the graveyard to represent the spirits dwelling within the house.
The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Stikker, whose work often leans into high-contrast, stylized, and gritty visual motifs. Stikker sought to capture a sense of whimsical dread, depicting the vacuum as a mundane appliance repurposed for ghostly containment. Upon its debut, the card was noted by players for its flavorful utility and its ability to act as a graveyard-hate piece, seamlessly blending the horror-themed narrative with functional, competitive design.
