Provenance

Where it came from

Ghost Town was originally released as a rare land in the 1997 Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Mike Elliott, the card was part of a cycle of lands intended to provide players with utility through returning cards to their hand, reflecting the set's mechanical focus on graveyard and hand manipulation. The artwork, created by artist Donato Giancola, depicts a desolate, atmospheric landscape that perfectly captures the gothic, ruined aesthetic that defined the Tempest block's visual identity.

The card was later included in 'The List', a rotating selection of cards from Magic's history that appear in Set Boosters starting in 2020. Its inclusion in this format acts as a nod to long-time players and collectors, offering a way for older, niche utility cards to re-enter the contemporary card pool. While Ghost Town was never a cornerstone of competitive tournament decks, it remains a beloved inclusion in Commander formats for its unique ability to protect lands from destruction or enable repeatable landfall triggers.
