Where it came from
Ghost Vacuum was released as part of the Duskmourn: House of Horror set in 2024, designed to evoke the aesthetic of 1980s and 90s supernatural horror cinema. As a card within the House of Horror expansion, it draws upon themes of haunted technology and domestic terror, reflecting the set's overarching narrative of a plane-wide house that manifests fears from childhood trauma and media tropes. The design team focused on creating top-down mechanical interactions that mirror the flavor of capturing spirits, grounding the card in the set's pervasive retro-horror atmosphere.
The illustrative direction for the Duskmourn promos emphasizes high-contrast lighting and exaggerated, suspenseful compositions to distinguish them from standard Magic: The Gathering artwork. The Ghost Vacuum illustration specifically leans into the 'trapped poltergeist' trope, utilizing a vibrant, eerie color palette that fits the set's stylistic departure from high fantasy. Upon its release, players noted the card for its efficient utility in graveyard-focused strategies, with the promo treatment serving as a sought-after aesthetic variant for fans of the horror genre.
