Where it came from
Ghostly Prison was originally introduced in the Champions of Kamigawa expansion in 2004, designed as a defensive enchantment to discourage aggression in multiplayer formats. The card quickly became a staple in Commander and casual play for its ability to tax opponents who wish to attack the controller, effectively creating a pillow-fort strategy.
