Provenance

Where it came from

Ghostly Prison was originally printed in the 2005 expansion Champions of Kamigawa. The card was designed to punish aggressive strategies by forcing opponents to pay a mana tax to declare attackers, effectively acting as a defensive pillow-fort enchantment. Its inclusion in the 2016 set Conspiracy: Take the Crown allowed it to enter the draft-focused environment, where its ability to mitigate multiple threats in a multiplayer format became highly prized.

The artwork for the original version was created by Greg Staples, while the Conspiracy: Take the Crown iteration features updated art by Nils Hamm. Hamm's rendition captures the haunting, ethereal nature of the card's effect, depicting a spirit-laden barrier that aligns with the set's political and intrigue-heavy themes. The card has remained a staple in Commander and other casual formats due to its reliable utility in stalling opponents.
