Where it came from
Giant Killer // Chop Down is a rare, foil-etched promotional card released in late 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine set for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing thematic inspiration from classic European fairy tales, the card features the 'Adventure' mechanic, a design innovation that allows a player to cast the creature as a spell before it enters the battlefield. This specific promo version was distributed primarily through Wizards Play Network stores to encourage participation in local game events during the set's inaugural season.
The artwork, illustrated by Zack Stella, captures the whimsical yet perilous tone of the Eldraine plane, juxtaposing the small, brave adventurer with a looming giant. Stella’s design language emphasizes the storybook aesthetic central to the set, utilizing a distinct visual style that differentiates this promo from the standard card frame. Upon its release, the card was widely praised by the competitive community for its versatility and tactical utility in various constructed formats, solidifying its status as a quintessential piece from the Throne of Eldraine collection.
