Provenance

Where it came from

The Wishclaw Talisman was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine set, a Magic: The Gathering expansion inspired by Arthurian legend and Grimm's fairy tales. Designed as a rare artifact, the card represents the folklore trope of a cursed or double-edged magical bargain, where the user gains a powerful advantage at the cost of providing an opening for their opponent.

The artwork for this particular version was created by Igor Kieryluk, who focused on a dark, opulent aesthetic to convey the talisman's hazardous nature. The card was met with interest upon release due to its unique mechanics in competitive play, where players must balance the utility of searching their deck for any card against the strategic risk of handing the artifact—and its functionality—over to an adversary.
