Provenance

Where it came from

The Giant Trap Door Spider was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed to introduce new mechanics and a wintry thematic shift to the game, moving away from the Mediterranean and fantasy archetypes of earlier sets. The card was created to fit the 'Lure' mechanic, allowing it to force creatures to block it, which represented the tactical ambush style of a trapdoor spider.

The artwork for this card was provided by artist Quinton Hoover. Known for his distinctive, flowing line work and illustrative style that defined much of the early Magic aesthetic, Hoover intended to capture the creature's sudden, predatory nature. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition to green-aligned decks, praised for its thematic cohesion and its role in mid-game board control, though it remains a relatively modest collectible within the broader scope of the Ice Age set.
