Where it came from
Gideon Blackblade was introduced as a planeswalker card in the War of the Spark expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in early 2019. This particular version, designated as collector number WS2, was part of the exclusive Mythic Edition, a premium offering sold directly through the Wizards of the Coast online store. The set was designed to showcase iconic characters in highly collectible, alternate-art formats, catering specifically to long-term players and high-end hobbyist collectors.
The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, a prominent illustrator known for his ethereal and emotive style within the fantasy genre. Voss aimed to capture a moment of stoic intensity for the character of Gideon Jura, reflecting his role as a heroic leader during the climactic conflict against Nicol Bolas. Upon its release, the Mythic Edition was met with significant interest from the community, though it also faced scrutiny regarding the distribution logistics typical of limited-run premium product cycles during that era.
