Where it came from
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar was originally released as a mythic rare planeswalker in the 2015 Battle for Zendikar set. This specific version was issued as a promotional card for the 2022 Regional Championship Qualifiers, serving as a reward for players participating in organized play events. The card features updated frame styling and art consistent with the high-level competitive support typically provided by Wizards of the Coast to encourage community tournament attendance.
The character Gideon Jura was designed to embody the protective and tactical nature of the white-aligned hero in Magic: The Gathering. This particular illustration maintains the heroic, stoic aesthetic established for the planeswalker throughout his storyline arc. As a staple of competitive play in various formats, the choice of this card for a promotional release was received by the player base as a nod to its historical impact and enduring utility in strategic deck-building.
