Where it came from
Released as an exclusive promotional item for San Diego Comic-Con 2016, this card is part of a special black-on-black set featuring five Planeswalker cards from the Magic: The Gathering card game. The set was designed by illustrator Aleksi Briclot, who employed a stark, monochromatic aesthetic to provide a dramatic and collectible alternative to the standard card releases of the time.
The cards were designed to appeal to high-end collectors, utilizing a unique matte finish and spot UV coating that made the artwork stand out against the dark, textured card stock. The reception was focused on the premium quality and the deliberate visual departure from the colorful, busy card frames typical of the base game, cementing its status as a sought-after piece of gaming memorabilia.
