Where it came from
Gideon's Phalanx was released in 2015 as part of the Magic Origins expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the backstories of five iconic planeswalkers, with this specific card serving as a thematic representation of Gideon Jura’s origin story on the world of Theros. It depicts his leadership and the disciplined military order of the Irregular, emphasizing the white-aligned mana color's focus on creature-based solidarity and defensive tactics.
The artwork was illustrated by Wesley Burt, who aimed to capture the kinetic energy of a divine formation suddenly manifesting on the battlefield. The card design leans heavily into the 'spell mastery' mechanic introduced in the set, rewarding players for having previously cast instant or sorcery spells. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its high mana cost and its potential utility in late-game strategies, effectively serving as a centerpiece for decks focused on token generation and white-aligned battlefield presence.
