Where it came from
Gifts Ungiven was originally released in the 2004 set Champions of Kamigawa, designed by Magic: The Gathering lead designer Mark Rosewater to provide a powerful tutor effect that rewards players for navigating complex card choices. Its inclusion in the 2009 From the Vault: Exiled collection was a deliberate nod to its notoriety, as the card had been banned in the tournament format known as Commander due to its ability to excessively manipulate the deck and graveyard simultaneously.
This specific printing features the iconic foil treatment and the commemorative expansion symbol synonymous with the From the Vault series, a collection curated by Wizards of the Coast to spotlight historically significant or mechanically influential cards. The artwork, illustrated by Daren Bader, maintains its ethereal, somber tone from the original release, aiming to depict the thematic weight of a forbidden or magical offering, a choice that has cemented its status as a sought-after piece for players interested in the game's competitive history.
