Provenance

Where it came from

The Goblin Digging Team card first appeared in the Fallen Empires expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 1994. The set was designed to explore the lore of the subterranean world of Dominaria, specifically focusing on the conflicts between various goblin tribes and the Order of the Ebon Hand. This particular card was intended to represent the resourcefulness and chaotic nature of goblin labor forces during these civil wars.

The illustration for the card was created by artist Jeff A. Menges, who provided much of the iconic visual identity for the game's early sets. His design for the Goblin Digging Team leans into the gritty, illustrative style common in the mid-nineties, capturing the frantic energy of the creatures. When the card was reprinted in the Fifth Edition base set in 1997, it retained this classic aesthetic, marking it as a piece of history from the era when Magic's artistic identity was still heavily rooted in high-fantasy pulp styles.
