What it does

Counter target spell. If that spell is countered this way, put it on top of its owner's library instead of into that player's graveyard.

"Oh, I had a conscience once. But alas, I seem to have forgotten where I put it."Chandler

Provenance

Where it came from

Memory Lapse was first introduced in the Homelands expansion in 1995, designed as a blue instant that allows a player to counter a spell by placing it on top of its owner's library rather than the graveyard. This mechanic offered a unique tempo-based disruption that differed from traditional permanent removal, forcing the opponent to re-draw the countered card on their next turn.

The Fifth Edition printing released in 1997 featured updated artwork by Mark Tedin, who depicted the mental disorientation of the spell through his signature surrealist style. While the card is a common rarity, its inclusion in the core set solidified its status as a staple for blue control decks, remaining a widely recognized tool for stalling opponents in both casual and competitive formats.
