Goblin Matron // Goblin Matron

The Goblin Matron card from the Modern Horizons Art Series was released in 2019 as part of a specialized set of collectible art cards included in booster packs. This series was designed to showcase the expanded illustration work created for the Modern Horizons set, which featured high-fantasy artwork intended to celebrate the legacy of Magic: The Gathering while introducing new mechanical complexity. These cards are non-playable and function purely as display pieces, highlighting the aesthetic contributions of the game's illustrators in a premium format.

The original illustration for this specific Goblin Matron card was provided by artist Jesper Ejsing. Known for his evocative and character-driven fantasy art, Ejsing’s depiction of the Matron emphasizes the chaotic, tribal nature of goblin society while maintaining the detailed textural work that defines modern trading card aesthetics. Upon its release, the Art Series was well-received by collectors for providing a cleaner, text-free way to appreciate the talent behind the game's visuals, serving as a distinct departure from the functional, text-heavy designs of standard playing cards.
