Where it came from
Godsend was released in 2014 as part of the Journey into Nyx expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set in the Greek-inspired plane of Theros, the card represents a legendary weapon forged by the gods to combat the returned planeswalker Elspeth Tirel. It serves as a narrative focal point within the block's storyline, symbolizing the divine intervention and conflict central to the set's climax.
The card was illustrated by Mike Sass, who captured the artifact's ethereal and formidable nature through a glowing, celestial aesthetic that aligns with the enchantment-heavy themes of the Theros block. Mechanically, the card was designed as a powerful piece of equipment that exiles creatures, reflecting its role as a god-forged tool of destruction. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its thematic resonance and its utility in both limited and constructed formats.
