Provenance

Where it came from

The Golgari Death Swarm was released as part of the 2021 Mystery Booster: Convention Edition playtest series, a collection of cards designed to explore experimental mechanics and unconventional design space within Magic: The Gathering. These cards were distributed exclusively at professional gaming events, intentionally eschewing the finalized card frames of standard releases in favor of a raw, minimalist aesthetic that highlights their status as unfinished, iterative concepts.

The design of this card reflects the signature philosophy of the Golgari Swarm, a guild within the Ravnica setting known for its reliance on graveyard recursion and insect-themed mechanics. By leaning into the playtest-exclusive 'sticker' or unique triggered ability mechanics common to this set, the card served as a vehicle for Wizards of the Coast designers to gather real-time feedback from players, ultimately treating the game's development process itself as a communal experience.
