Where it came from
The Golgari Death Swarm card was released in 2019 as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique set designed by Wizards of the Coast for convention exclusive events. These cards were distributed inside select booster packs at events like MagicFest, intended to provide players with a glimpse into experimental design space and mechanics that had not yet been finalized for official release.
The design of the card leans into the flavor of the Golgari Swarm, a guild from the Ravnica setting known for recycling life and death. As a playtest card, the layout features a simplified, utilitarian aesthetic intended for internal testing rather than mass market distribution. Because these were never part of a standard tournament-legal set, they are viewed by collectors as a rare behind-the-scenes artifact of the game's development process.
