Gorilla Titan

Gorilla Titan was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set marked a significant shift in design philosophy, focusing heavily on the graveyard as a secondary resource and emphasizing the threshold mechanic, which rewarded players for having seven or more cards in their graveyard. As an uncommon creature, the card was designed to be a reliable, mid-to-late game threat in Limited formats, embodying the raw, primal nature of the Krosan forest setting where much of the set’s narrative took place.

The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Heather Hudson, whose work defined much of the aesthetic of the Odyssey block. Hudson utilized a dynamic, earthy palette to capture the muscular power and intense focus of the gorilla, aiming to convey the creature's ferocity through a balance of realistic anatomy and stylized fantasy elements. The design was well-received by players for its efficiency and thematic cohesion, fitting seamlessly into the aggressive green decks that characterized the play environment of the time.
