Where it came from
Gorilla Tactics was released in 2019 as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards set, a series of experimental designs included in limited-run booster packs distributed at major Magic: The Gathering events. These cards were created by Wizards of the Coast design teams to explore non-traditional mechanics and humorous concepts that fell outside the standard development cycle of the game, serving as a playground for R&D to test ideas in a loose, casual environment.
The card features an illustration by Titus Lunter and is characterized by its tongue-in-cheek mechanics that play upon the absurdity of its name. Within the context of the Playtest series, the design purposefully ignores the rigorous balance and frame standards required for tournament-legal sets, instead leaning into the communal, high-chaos spirit of the Mystery Booster drafts where these cards were intended to be experienced.
