Provenance

Where it came from

Grasslands first appeared in the Mirage expansion in 1996 as part of a cycle of fetch lands that allowed players to search for specific basic land types. This specific version was reprinted in the Commander 2017 set, which focused on tribal mechanics and deck archetypes. The reprint provided players with an accessible way to include land-smoothing utility in multi-colored decks, maintaining the card's function as a staple for deck-building flexibility.

The artwork for this version retains the original illustration by artist Rob Alexander, whose work defined much of the early visual identity of the game. Alexander utilized a naturalistic, painterly style intended to evoke the serene, sweeping vistas of an expansive prairie. His design was well-received by players for its atmospheric quality, cementing the card as a classic piece of land-based landscape art within the game's expansive history.
