Where it came from
Grasslands was originally introduced in the Mirage set in 1996 as part of a cycle of fetch lands that allowed players to sacrifice the land to search their library for a Plains or a Forest. This design was intended to improve deck consistency and mana fixing in the early days of Magic: The Gathering, providing a strategic tool for multicolor decks that rewarded careful land management.
The version from Forgotten Realms Commander, released in 2021, features updated artwork that integrates the classic mechanic into the aesthetic of the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse. While the original Mirage art focused on the wilderness of the Magic setting, this iteration reimagines the concept through the lens of the iconic tabletop role-playing game, maintaining the functional utility that has made the card a staple in budget-conscious Commander decks for years.
