Where it came from
Grasslands was originally introduced in the 1996 Mirage expansion as part of a cycle of land cards that allowed players to sacrifice the land to search their library for specific basic land types. This mechanic was designed to provide color fixing for multicolor decks, ensuring players could access the resources necessary to cast their spells in the mid-to-late game stages. The card reflects the lush, untapped aesthetic of the Mirage setting, emphasizing the natural beauty of the land.
For the Commander Masters printing, which features the collector number 1002, the card was selected to provide accessibility and utility for the popular Commander format. The artwork and design honor the original spirit of the Mirage cycle while fitting into the modern aesthetic of the set. As a staple utility land, it is received by players as a functional piece of deck-building history that maintains relevance in multi-color strategies by providing reliable mana acceleration and stabilization.
