Lore

Why it matters

Grateful Apparition occupies a distinct niche in the Final Fantasy Commander set, functioning as a repeatable engine for proliferating counters on the battlefield. Because its ability triggers whenever you cast a planeswalker spell, it rewards players who carefully time their cards to maximize value across the entire board state.

Provenance

Where it came from

Grateful Apparition was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'War of the Spark' set, specifically featured in the supplementary 'Final Fantasy Commander' thematic deck releases that leveraged the game's popular mechanics. The card was designed to support the proliferate mechanic, a strategic staple in Commander format play that allows players to advance the state of counters on permanents and players alike.

The artwork, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures the ethereal and ghostly aesthetic synonymous with the spirit-themed creatures of the set. Staples, a veteran illustrator for the franchise, aimed to evoke a sense of solemnity and spectral power, aligning with the card's function of aiding allies through its ability. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its efficient mana cost and its utility in decks centered around loyalty or +1/+1 counters.
