Where it came from
Graveyard Dig was released in 2021 as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a series of experimental designs included within the Mystery Booster: Convention Edition product. These cards were specifically engineered to feature 'playtest' designs that were never intended for standard sanctioned play, allowing the R&D team at Wizards of the Coast to explore unconventional mechanics, nostalgic callbacks, and high-variance designs in a limited, convention-exclusive environment.
The card features the distinct aesthetic of a R&D playtest sticker, characterized by a white-bordered, minimalist design that prioritizes functional text over elaborate illustration. By utilizing these 'test' labels, the design team aimed to evoke the raw, iterative process of game development, providing players with a glimpse into the mechanics that remain on the cutting room floor during the typical design cycle of Magic: The Gathering.
