Where it came from
Squidnapper was released as part of the Mystery Booster: Convention Edition Playtest Cards, a unique set distributed at Wizards of the Coast events starting in 2019 and updated in 2021. These cards were designed to simulate the feel of R&D playtest materials, featuring distinctive silver-white borders and unfinished, minimalist graphic design. They served as a creative experiment to explore unconventional mechanics that were not yet balanced or finalized for standard legal play.
The design of the card emphasizes its status as a work-in-progress iteration, utilizing a stark, functional layout rather than standard card art. The card represents the playful side of Magic: The Gathering development, where designers test blue-sky concepts—such as theft-based creature manipulation—before determining if they merit inclusion in a formal set. It was received by the community as a prized collector's curiosity, valued for its rarity and the behind-the-scenes glimpse it provides into the game's iterative design process.
